ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENTAL OBJECTIVES

Administrative Skills

Proficiency in composing business documents, telephone and interpersonal skills, and office procedures create the groundwork on which to continue building office and communication skills.  The ability to communicate, coach, lead, resolve conflicts and motivate employees from any culture and background keeps the office moving forward.  Progressive requirements in the upper-level classes such as identifying creative solutions or alternative and implementing them bring the students training in management perspectives.

Technology Problem-Solving Skills

Intermediate and advanced studies of software tools require thought in many areas such as design, arrangement, and software selection for projects, and presentation arrangement. Being able to identify creative solutions or alternatives and implement them in the business office requires computer expertise.

Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills

The ability to think through issues and analyze situations for efficient and effective problem resolution is invaluable.  Practice in analysis, interpretation, inference, explanation and evaluation increase ability to think critically.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

ADM 240 Office Production Systems, 4 units

Prerequisite: ADM 120, ADM 121, ADM 134, ADM 141 or Departmental Approval

Exposure to office analysis techniques, work measurements, form design, paperwork, flowcharts. Presentation of techniques and concepts concerning productivity, ergonomics, and change in the office. Emphasis on systems project.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Project based activities that simulate real world utilization of software applications.  Project based activities consist of activities which require the student to apply their skill with word processing, spreadsheets, database, and electronic presentation software, as well as email, fax, and Web applications.  Work is organized into four modules and 19 projects.  Each project includes four or more related jobs.  Projects are independent of each other and range in difficulty from simple to advanced.  Problem solving skills are developed as the student makes independent decisions about formatting, level of document integration, and choice of appropriate tools to complete assignments.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The student will learn to prioritize, analyze, and create business documents utilizing Microsoft Office Professional Suite.  Integration skills will be further developed as files are imported and exported into other applications.  Management reporting problems will be analyzed and solved utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and database software.

PREREQUISITE:

Successful completion of ADM 120, ADM 121, ADM 134, ADM 141, and upper division standing, or equivalent.

HOURS OF INSTRUCTION:

Two 105-minute periods per week, OR Three 70 minute periods per week, or One 210 minute period per week

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

The class is a Skills Lab, and as such students are working at their own pace, self-teaching utilizing the required text, and hands on individual help from the instructor.  Students are encouraged to work at their own pace with assistance from instructor when requested.  It is up to the student to maintain a pace that will match the minimum pace set forth in this outline.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:

  1. Integrated Business Projects (2nd Edition), Olinzock, Arney, and Skean, South-Western Edlucational Publishing, Thomson Learning.
  2. One USB drive for the purposes of saving and transferring files.

LATE WORK:

This course is a real world simulation and as such we employ deadlines.  No late work will be accepted.  Should you need a previously assigned document to continue with the current weeks work, it is solely your responsibility to obtain the completed file from your instructor or create the file for “no credit”. 

COURSE CONTENT:

The class will be set up on lab basis.  Students will be required to work on the personal computers to complete lab projects assigned each week.  This is a 4 unit college course and as such you should expect to between one hour and two hours outside of regular class time on the computer for every hour spent in the classroom.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Ten points will be deducted from the attendance portion of the grade for any days’ absence during a scheduled class meeting, or missing 1-1/2 hours of any night class meeting.

PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is not condoned or excused.  Term papers, research reports and essays are expected to be the individual work of the student.  References and sources of information should be identified and accurately documented within the body of any written work.  Violation of the honor code or plagiarism is cause for dismissal.

STUDENT SERVICES:  Reading, writing, researching, and math tutorial services are available from the Libraries Student Service Center.  The Computer Labs are open on the main campus from 1-6 p.m. daily and the Library has workstations available during all business hours.  A tutor will be available in the room 5 computer lab during some afternoons, see schedule to be posted on the 2nd week of the quarter.
