COURSE DESCRIPTION: This instruction and skill practice program seeks to develop understanding and skill in office practices involving the use of computers. Emphasis is placed on business letters, memos, outlines, tables, and report keyboarding. Development of speed and accuracy is stressed with the goal of attaining a speed of at least 40 words a minute with five or fewer errors on a five-minute timing. The lab course provides self-paced instruction adapted to the student's individual needs and abilities.
OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate proficiency in keyboarding business letters, memos, reports, outlines, and tables.
2. Demonstrate proficiency of speed and accuracy on the computer, attaining a speed of 40 net words a minute with 5 or less errors on a 5-minute writing.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of, and applied proficiency in using the computer.
PREREQUISITES: Beginning Keyboarding (OA 51) or equivalent; ability to type 25 words a minute, with five errors or less, on a five minute timed writing.
HOURS OF INSTRUCTION WEEKLY: Five 50-minute periods of lecture/lab per week.
TEACHING METHOD: During lecture periods, formal instruction is presented in the form of demonstrations and explanations. Instructor controlled timed writings for speed and accuracy building will be given. In lab periods the student works at his/her own rate under the general supervision of the instructor.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:
1. College Keyboarding, by VanHuss, Duncan, and Warner, South-Western Publishing Company. ISBN# 0-538-71652-5.
2. Two 3 1/2" diskettes for storage of documents.
COURSE CONTENT: The student progresses at his/her own rate under the general supervision of the instructor.
BASIS OF EVALUATION: Completion of assigned work (30%), improvement in speed and accuracy (30%), students who do not achieve speed goal of 40 NWAM grade will be lowered one grade level), midterm and final examinations (30%), and class attendance (10%). No make-up tests will be allowed unless student makes prior arrangements with the instructor.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: For each nine (9) absences, the student's grade will be lowered by one (1) grade level. RETURNING STUDENTS WHO REGISTER LATE WILL NOT RECEIVE EXCUSED ABSENCES FOR ANY DAYS ISSED THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE QUARTER.
NO STUDENT WILL BE ADMITTED TO CLASS FIVE (5) MINUTES AFTER CLASS HAS BEGUN.

ASSIGNMENTS SUBMITTED AFTER DUE DATE WILL BE LOWERED ONE GRADE FOR EACH WEEK THEY ARE LATE.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
The lab is open most afternoons. Please see instructor regarding lab availability. You are welcome to use any computer during the afternoon to keyboard. If you need help from the instructor please make arrangements before coming.
TYPING CERTIFICATES: To be eligible for a typing certificate the student must have three (3) timed writings with five (5) or fewer errors. Requests for typing certificates must be received in writing at least three (3) days before they are required.
