INTERMEDIATE KEYBOARDING II

COURSE OUTLINE

CREDIT: 2 UNITS

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intermediate Keyboarding II is a continuation of Intermediate Keyboarding I. Emphasis is placed on formatting business letters with special features, memoranda, reports, tables, administrative documents, and merging. Development of speed and accuracy is stressed with the goal of attaining a speed of at least 50 words per minute with five or fewer errors on a five-minute timing.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate proficiency in keyboarding various general office problems.

2. Demonstrate proficiency of speed and accuracy on the typewriter, obtaining a speed of 50 net words a minute with 5 or fewer errors on a 5-minute controlled writing.

PREREQUISITES: Intermediate Keyboarding I or equivalent.

HOURS OF INSTRUCTION WEEKLY: Five 50-minute labs per week.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS

1. College Keyboarding by Van Huss, Duncan, and Warner, South-Western Publishing Company. ISBN# 0-538-70808-5.

2. Two 3 ½" diskettes for storing documents.

TEACHING METHOD: During lecture periods, formal instruction is presented in the form of demonstrations and explanations. Instructor controlled timed writings for speed and accuracy building will be given. In lab periods the student works at his/her own rate under the general supervision of the instructor.

BASIS OF EVALUATION: Completion of assigned work (30%), improvement in speed and accuracy (30%), students who do not achieve speed goal of 50 NWAM grade will be lowered one grade level, midterm and final examinations (30%), and class attendance (10%). No make-up tests will be allowed unless student makes prior arrangements with the instructor.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: For each nine (9) absences, the student's grade will be lowered by one (1) grade level. RETURNING STUDENTS WHO REGISTER LATE WILL NOT RECEIVE EXCUSED ABSENCES FOR ANY DAYS MISSED THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE QUARTER.No student will be admitted to class five (5) minutes after class has begun.

**NO FOOD OR DRINK ALLOWED IN THE TYPING OR COMPUTER ROOMS**

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The typing lab is open most afternoons. You are welcome to use any computer during the afternoon to keyboard. If you need help from the instructor please make arrangements before coming. Check with instructor regarding availability of lab.

TYPING CERTIFICATES: To be eligible for a typing certificate the student must have three (3) timed writings with five (5) or fewer errors. Requests for typing certificates must be received in writing at least three (3) days before they are required.
