INSTRUCTOR: Linda Rahmoller, office hours, Tuesday through Friday, 1:15 -2:00 p.m., and by appointment. E-mail address: lrahmoller@humphreys.edu.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course designed to give the student background in the field of medical transcription. It provides the student practice in the preparation of medical forms and reports through typing visual copy.
OBJECTIVES:
1. The student will become proficient at keyboarding medical forms and documents, with emphasis placed on accuracy.
2. The student will become familiar with the various reference sources of medical information and how to use these sources efficiently.
3. As a result of this class, the student will be able to expand his/her medical vocabulary.
4. As a result of this class, the student will be able to expand his/her grammar and proofreading skills.
PREREQUISITES: Ability to type 40 wpm on a five-minute test, or approval of instructor.
HOURS OF INSTRUCTION: Five 50-minute periods each week.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:
1. Medical Keyboarding, Typing, and Transcribing, 4th Edition, by Diehl and Fordney, ISBN #0-7216-6858-5.
2. Two 3 1/2" diskettes for storage of documents.
COURSE CONTENT: The student will work at his/her own rate under the general supervision of the instructor.
BASIS OF EVALUATION: Completion of textbook assignments (60%), tests (30%), and attendance (10%).
ATTENDANCE POLICY: For each nine (9) absences, the student's grade will be lowered one grade level.
TYPING CERTIFICATE: To be eligible for a typing certificate the student must have three (3) timed writings with five (5) or fewer errors. Requests for typing certificates must be received in writing at least three (3) days before they are required.
