COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to improve upon office skills by providing practical application in such areas as processing information with computers, telephone procedures, filing and managing records, processing business documents, procedures for sending and receiving mail, and accounting and record keeping applications in the office. Also included is a study of human relations with emphasis on the role of the office worker in contract with superiors, peers, subordinates, and the general public.
PREREQUISITES: ENGL 40, OA 100 and ability to type 45 wpm on a five minute test, OA 140 or 141, or approval of instructor.
HOURS OF INSTRUCTION: Five 50-minute periods a week.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Instruction will be given by lecture and discussion during lecture periods and by individual help during lab periods.
BASIS OF EVALUATION: Completion of assigned work (40%), tests (30%), assigned library projects (10%), spelling tests (10%), class participation and attendance (10%).
ATTENDANCE POLICY: For each nine (9) absences student's grade will be lowered by one (1) grade level.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS
1. Procedures for the Automated Office, Burton, Shelton, and Jennings. Prentice Hall, ISBN# 0-13-261025-6.
2. Two diskettes for storage of documents.
WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: A schedule for the entire quarter appears on the following page. Students will be required to keep pace with the class and the assignments. ASSIGNMENTS SUBMITTED AFTER ASSIGNED DEADLINE WILL BE LOWERED ONE GRADE FOR EACH WEEK THEY ARE LATE.

GRADING STANDARDS FOR JOBS:
Major penalties (one point each):
1. Misspelled or omitted word
2. Strikeover
3. Major violation of correct form (ex: SS when document should be DS.)
4. Incorrect copy.
Minor penalties (three equal one point):
1. Incorrect punctuation
2. Minor violation of form (ex: omitting tab at beginning of paragraph)
GRADING:
A = 0 points
A- = 2 minor points
B = 1-2 points
C = 3-4 points
D = 5-6 points
F = 7 or more point
