INSTRUCTOR:

E-mail address: lrahmoller@humphreys.edu.COURSE DESCRIPTION: Legal transcription is designed to give students a background in the field of legal typing by providing them with practice in typing legal forms and correspondence in a simulated office environment. Correspondence, printed legal forms, and legal document such as: wills, leases, deeds, land descriptions, probate and the various legal papers related to litigation, hearing and legal practice in general are prepared. The student also studies legal terminology and procedures and works on developing employable levels of skill in legal transcription with regard to speed and accuracy.
OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, the student will:
1. Transcribe legal dictation into neatly typed, acceptable form.
2. Recognize, use, and correctly spell terms used in legal documents and forms.
3. Transcribe, set up, and correctly spell terms used in legal documents and forms.
4. Understand the procedures involved in preparing papers and the order in which they are generally submitted to the court.
5. Identify selected areas of law and the documents and procedures normally involved in processing legal papers in those areas.
6. Proofread copy carefully and find ALL ERRORS.
PREREQUISITES: ENGL 40, OA 100, OA 140 OR 141, and ability to type 40 wpm on a five minute test, or approval of instructor.
HOURS OF INSTRUCTION: Five 50-minute class periods a week.
TEACHING METHOD: The student will work at his/her own rate under the general supervision of the instructor.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:
1. Word Processing for the Legal Secretary, by Dr. Joyce Morton, 3rd Edition. Published by Western Tape, Palo Cedro, CA.
2. Two 3 1/2" diskettes for storing documents.
3. One set of headphones.
BASIS FOR EVALUATION: Completion of assigned work and attendance.
GRADING STANDARDS FOR PROJECTS:
Major penalties (one point each):
1. Misspelled or omitted word
2. Strikeover
3. Major violation of correct legal form
4. Incorrect copy
Minor penalties (three equals one point):
1. Incorrect punctuation
2. Minor violations of legal form
A = 0 Points
A- = 2 minor penalties
B = 1-2 Points
C = 3-4 Points
D = 5-6 Points
F = 7 or more Points
ATTENDANCE POLICY: For each nine (9) absences, the student's grade will be lowered one grade level. RETURNING STUDENTS WHO REGISTER LATE WILL NOT RECEIVE EXCUSED ABSENCES FOR ANY DAYS MISSED THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE QUARTER. No student will be admitted to class five (5) minutes after class has begun.
TYPING CERTIFICATE: To be eligible for a typing certificate the student must have three (3) timed writings with five (5) or fewer errors. Requests for typing certificates must be received in writing at least three (3) days before they are required.
