MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION

COURSE OUTLINE

CATALOG NUMBER: ADM 172

CREDIT: 2 UNITS

INSTRUCTOR: Linda Rahmoller, office hours, Monday through Thursday: 1:15-2:00 p.m., and by appointment. E-mail address: lrahmoller@ humphreys.edu.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course designed to give the student a background in the field of medical transcription. Provides practice in the preparation of medical forms, records, and reports through dictated transcription material. Study and use of transcription equipment is included.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, the student will:

1. Transcribe medical documents through a variety of letters, memos, and reports that are typical of those encountered in the medical field.

2. Enhance the student's knowledge of medical terminology, reinforce anatomical knowledge, and English language skills.

3. Understanding and acceptance of the ethical conduct required of persons handling confidential medical data.

4. Proofread copy carefully and find all errors.

PREREQUISITES: ENGL 120 and ability to type 40 wpm on a five minute test, OA 140 or 141, or approval of instructor.

HOURS OF INSTRUCTION: Five 50-minute periods per week.

TEACHING METHODS: The student will work at his/her own rate under the general supervision of the instructor.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:

1. Medical Transcription, by Fisher and Frantz, Glencoe/McGraw Hill.

2. Two 3 1/2" diskettes for storage of documents.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: For each nine (9) absences, the student's grade will be lowered one grade level. RETURNING STUDENTS WHO REGISTER LATE WILL NOT RECEIVE EXCUSED ABSENCES FOR ANY DAYS MISSED THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE QUARTER.

TYPING CERTIFICATE: To be eligible for a typing certificate the student must have three (3) timed writings with five (5) or fewer errors. Requests for typing certificates must be received in writing at least three (3) days before they are required.

BASIS OF EVALUATION: Completion of assigned work with satisfactory grade, quizzes given after each unit, and attendance.

Major penalties (one point each):

A = 0 Points

A- = 2 minor penalties

B = 1-2 points

C = 3-4 points

D = 5-6 points

F = 7 or more points
