BEGINNING KEYBOARDING

CREDIT: 2 UNITS

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course designed for students who cannot keyboard or who do know the keyboard well. Emphasis is placed upon correct techniques as a basis for developing speed and efficient

keyboarding skills, keyboarding mastery by the touch system, speed and accuracy drills, centering, keying of simple compositions and simple tabulations. This lab course provides self-paced instruction adapted to the student's individual needs and abilities.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate proficiency of speed and accuracy on the computer, attaining a speed of 25 net words a minute with 5 errors or less, on a 5-minute timed writing.

2. Demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: keyboarding position, keyboarding response patterns, stroking, and manipulative controls.

3. Demonstrate proficiency in the production of centering drills, tabulation drills, and simple compositions.

PREREQUISITES: None.

HOURS OF INSTRUCTION: Five 50-minute periods per week.

TEACHING METHODS: Use of demonstrations in the introduction of new concepts. Methods of keyboarding different problems will be interspersed throughout the course. The student will work at his/her own rate under the general supervision of the instructor.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS:

1. College Keyboarding, by VanHuss, Duncan, and Warner, South-Western Publishing Company, ISBN# 0-538-71652-5.

2. Two 3 1/2" diskettes.

BASIS OF EVALUATION: Completion of assigned work with passable grades (30%), periodic quizzes will be given covering all aspects of keyboarding presented in this particular course (30%), improvement in speed and accuracy (30%), students who do not achieve speed goal of 25 NWAM, grade will be lowered one grade level, and class attendance (10%). No make-up quizzes will be allowed unless student makes prior arrangements with the instructor.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: For each nine (9) absences, the student's grade will be lowered by one grade level.

PROVISIONS FOR SPECIAL STUDENT NEEDS: Individual help from the instructor is always available. If the student is having particular problems with poor techniques, learning difficulties, or understanding concepts needed for completing the problems, the instructor may help by suggesting additional materials or projects.

COURSE CONTENT: Lessons 1-30 will be completed. Timings will be administered and will be supervised by the instructor.
