Initial Attendance (IA)

An Initial Attendance student is a new F-1 student who will begin their program by entering the United States using an Initial Attendance I-20. This applies to students who are outside the U.S. and will apply for an F-1 visa, as well as those who will travel and re-enter the U.S. to activate a new SEVIS record.

F-1 Transfer

An F-1 transfer student is a student who is already in the United States in valid F-1 status at another SEVP-certified school and plans to continue their studies at a new institution. A student’s SEVIS record is transferred from their previous school to a new institution, allowing them to maintain their F-1 status without leaving the U.S.

Change of Status (COS)

A Change of Status student is an individual who is currently in the United States in a different nonimmigrant status (such as B-1/B-2, H-1B, L-1, or F-2) and has applied to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to change their status to F-1.
